Shopping Reflections

**************************************************************************

Over the years, I have morphed in terms of my shopping-style. Once an impulse-shopper only, I've shifted into a more strategic buyer. Honestly, I credit the internet for these changes. I mean, without online browsing, catalogs were my only means of keeping up. Especially when living in small-town America for lots of my life. So I'd go to the mall (the sad, pathetic excuse for a mall we had in Podunk, IL) and head straight for the Express, picking out new items when they'd reach the racks. We even had a personal shopper (yes, Express did this... even though it wasn't official. She knew us by name. Kinda embarrassing, really.).

But now that I'm on my own as a shopper/fashionista-in-training, much more interested in the trends, and running rampant in a shopping mecca (seriously... Northpark has it all!), I do find myself really researching before buying. Sure, there are still the "OMG I need that, yoink!" moments, but I really (really!) do try and make sure I know I want it when I buy it.

Take the blouse, for instance.

I know you've all heard me talking about buying an Equipment blouse for ages now. Classic piece! But definitely pricey for something so simple and replicable. Madewell did a great job of creating one, and even my tried and true Express did a fine job. And for the past many, many months, I've amassed lots of 'em. I love them all dearly and wear them to death-- a blouse is sort of my go-to outfit these days, my uniform of sorts. But something about the Equipment ones said quality to me the others haven't quite matched. Well, readers... I finally pulled the trigger! And this long, self-indulgent post regarding pining for a blouse ends with this.

*Swoon.* (and a pair of Michael Jackson-inspired glittery loafers to boot!!)

Huge Shopbop sale!

Just a quickie post, y'all. My fave online boutique, Shopbop, is having a massive sale today! Not only is a ton of stuff on sale, but you can get up to $500 off when you spend $1500. But let's be honest, I'm not spending $1500. However, you can take $50 off $250, or $100 off $500! Nice. Here are some of my picks from the sale...

Merci beaucoup, mes amis!

Thank you all for your honest feedback regarding my new pants! I have to be truthful, I was secretly hoping for you all to say, "So pretty, Justine! Great! Keep em!", but the fact that you didn't just confirms my suspcion that they need to go back. Sad. But I guess the flip side is I can get something else in it's stead. After a big risk and fail with those pants, I think I might stick to something simple and practical-- new jeans. I've been wearing my Hudsons for several years now and they're starting to show the wear, plus no matter how much I love my AE super skinnies, I'm a bit of a denim brand whore (I'll admit it!) and want some designer duds. Oooorrrrr, the Equipment shirt I've been pining for... which isn't quite as practical, but has definitely been on my wishlist for some time. Decisions, decisions.  :)

I also get to pick up my presale top from Neiman's this evening, so definitely expect an outfit with it soon. I've never purchased a Robbi + Nikki item before, but given the father company (Robert Rodriguez), I have high hopes that it will be worn many, many times.

Also, miss Chloe from the Chloe Conspiracy, and now See Chloe Shop, is hosting a great giveaway with one of my faves, Shopbop! Check out her giveaway here, and enter to win a $100 gift card. Not too shabby, eh?

Enjoy your Wednesday, readers! (and p.s., is it just me or is this week drrraaaagggingggg byyyyy?)

OOTD: "Ikat" of the Tiger.

Ha! Get it?! Like that awesome (coughSARCASTICcough) song Eye of the Tiger? Grrr, baby. :)

(...and Happy Mother's Day!!)

Although I was greatly fooled by what I thought was a gift from the gods (namely, the Intermix coupon that ended up having more strings attached than I expected), I looked cute on my shopping trip Saturday! It wasn't all bad-- if you read my post from earlier, you'll see I took advantage of the ever-tempting Neiman Marcus Pre-sale event. Ladies, this is a killer. Do not go unless you plan on dropping dough. I rarely go in to Neiman's, but when I do, it always seems like pre-sale time and I always leave with a new credit card bill (hate they don't take Visa debit). Plus, the SA was cute and I recognized her from my retail days (she worked across the street from me at an adorable boutique that has since closed). We had a nice long talk about what a shame it is they don't carry Geren Ford at Neiman's (we were both wearing GF). Speaking of:

Blazer: Zara Basics blush blazer
Jeans: Hudson signature bootcuts
Shoes: Charles by Charles David reptile wedges
Necklace: Flavanilla (etsy)

This top was actually a part of my Friends and Family loot at Shopbop and I snagged the last one (though it's still available at Intermix and Geren Ford's site). That always makes it more special, right? I love this top so much. When I saw that pattern I knew it would be the perfect way to marry the feminine aesthetic I gravitate towards with the tribal trend that is "in" for spring/summer. Plus, it looks great with my new Zara blazer (which sadly hides the back of this top. I'll save that for another time). I have been looking for a tailored blazer for a while now and wanted one in white or black. But. I spotted this pretty blush color and couldn't resist. It fits me wonderfully and has a great weight to it-- I think it will work for most of the year despite the springtime hue. I love when pieces are pretty and special enough to be worn without a lot of adornment or extras, so all this called for was my "Love" necklace and I was out the door. I'd say it was a great Saturday, even counting the sad news about my strings-attached coupon. Win some, lose some.

My readers, my saviors.

Thanks to all who commented yesterday about the virtual shopping bag dillemas. When I started this blog, I did so with the hope that it would be like having tons of shopping pals who help me make bad good decisions about what to buy, and who don't stare at me blankly with their arms around their chests wondering when the hell can we leave, we've been here for five hours? Well, I got my wish! The shoe thing has almost become a task rather than something fun, and my indecisiveness has been running rampant. I had finally narrowed it down to two, and with your help, I chose the JS ones. Now, this post isn't just to brag about my cute new shoes (ok well it kinda is), but it's also to let ya'll know that the Jessica Simpson website is faboo, for anyone who didn't know about it. Because I didn't-- I stumbed upon it while searching for a downloadable image of the shoe itself to post on this here bloggy-blog. The site carries eveything of hers, and it seems you can find lots of good sales as well. The Cedarys were on sale for $59, and then I searched coupon codes (like a good little online shopper) and found a 20% coupon (cs2009), which ended up being good even on sale items. And doesn't seem to have an expiration... So I scored those pretties (after shipping and taxes) for less than $60. Which isn't the biggest bargain I've ever seen, but it was definitely my cheapest option out there for this particular shoe and color. And not to mention her clothes and accessories, too! Which are also on the site. Aaaaanyway, I'm getting wordy, but I thought I'd share since many of you seem to love JS and I know it's a rather popular brand.

If I wore super super high heels (like 5+ inches), I would definitely get these as well. Sigh.  (husband would be pretty sad since I'd end up towering over him...)

Virtual Shopping bags...

I'm quite bored today at work (doing really menial stuff because we've been crazy slow around here), so I've been doing a lot of online perusing. I'm trying to round out my spring/summer wardrobe and think I've done a good job so far-- stocked up on dresses, playful short-shorts, mini skirts, blazers and jackets... the only thing that's generally missing are some new shirts to pair with the shorts/skirts and nude shoes. Yep. STILL on the lookout for the nude shoe. Here are two inexpensive choices and I think I'll get one or the other...
Jessica Simpson Cedary, in sand, $59.95 (on sale at JS's website). A more casual nude sandal that I can see going with most everything. (drawback= too casual?)

Michael Antonio Tinsley, $48.00. Much sexier and strappier, but possibly better for going out/Vegas than the other option. (drawback= not real leather, could be cheap in person)

Also, I've had these two items in my Shopbop cart for some time now and just haven't committed. It's one or the other (for this month, at least). What shall I do?

Foley and Corinna Disco City bag, in fuchsia. Very versatile, can be used year round and possibly even daily. Good for night/day transition. (drawback= I love the pink, but will I eventually be bored with it? Since I'm no bag-lady, will I regret it?)

Sunner Pixie Shorts, in Amethyst. So cute and easy to wear. (drawbacks= do I need more shorts? And this isn't as useful and smart of a purchase.)

Another random virtual shopping cart item:

BB Dakota leather jacket, on sale at Piperlime. Maybe not the most useful thing for right now, but it's super cheap and really, really pretty! And I've been on the hunt for one for a while now... seems like the time to buy.

And, because Codename Ivy apparently loves me, she made me this, which shall arrive on my doorstep Saturday. YAY! Thanks, girl!!! It's GORGEOUS. (and a total knock-off of the J.Crew Fenton/Fallon necklace, no?)  :)

Let's Get a Little Honest. MONEY.

OK, lovies. Yesterday, I was contacted by Prosper.com, a peer-to-peer lending site*. They've decided to dedicate this week to talking about one of the most difficult things for us shop-a-holics to face: Money. And budgets. And, well... stickin' to 'em. They've dubbed it "Fashionably Talking Taboo week," where we're challenged with being totally honest with our money sitch so we can better exercise financial fitness. Here it is, straight from the horse's mouth:

"The Talk About The Taboo Campaign has been launched by Prosper to try to get more people to open up about one of the last remaining social taboos, personal finance. Prosper believes that sharing a problem is often one of the first steps towards solving it and that this campaign may be a means of helping the incredible number of people struggling with their personal finances. The Talk About Taboo site is a place where people can share their stories about how they’re tackling debt, and celebrate your milestones as they strive for better financial fitness, as well as helping them find guidance and practical help. We encourage people to share with us, and in return are providing them with a simple way to be heard and supported."

How does this affect our little blogging niche? Well, this discussion is super-important, especially when we're surrounded by other gals and bloggies with significantly varying financial stability. Just because Bloggie X can afford it doesn't mean I can or that I'm entitled to it, too. Let's just say I know it can really put some stress on the bank account! So, I hope that by letting ya'll know my story, you'll 1) know how I shop and budget my money, and 2) realize you're not alone if you have a tight budget, too!

As for my story: I was lucky to grow up in a house that had good financial means. However, I never really learned the value of a dollar despite having worked since I was 16. I was always "bailed out" when found in sticky financial situations. After graduating from college and being on my own fiancially, I had a lot to learn about budgeting and not racking up the credit card debt.

So here's what I've learned to do: my husband and I sit down and calculate our current costs vs. income. Then, we figure out what's left after stashing some money to savings and divide it between eachother. Every paycheck, I get a sum of money that's appropriate for our income/costs ratio and use that on whatever I want. The best thing about this is that it allows for us to be 100% honest with our spending. Because of my tight budget, I do a lot of shopping at sites that have very affordable fashion, like Forever 21 (duh, I shop there too much!), Charlotte Russe, Urban Outfitters, and GoJane. I also always search for coupon codes before online-buying... never know what's out there until you try!

I'm definitely still tempted by my credit card, especially because my budget is teeeeeeny tiny (in my opinion), and my wants are usually way over my financial means. On top of it all, I'm about to go back to school and incur some serious debt. My little budget is most likely about to get even smaller, and I definitely worry about how I'll handle that. But hubs and I plan on figuring it out, and I trust that we'll budget the way we need to. In reality, it's hard to say no to those $300 shoes, but it's much harder to think about being over-my-head-in-debt and questioning if I'll ever get to retire. I have to get honest: I can't afford Louboutins. I can't use every promotion code that comes my way just because it's a good deal. I can't keep up with the Joneses. But that's ok, and someday, I hope to be stable enough to indulge in those things every once in a while. Good things come to those that wait, right?

If you want to share your story on their site, you could win $1,000! I really think the more we support each other on this, the easier it will be for all of us to be honest with ourselves with our spending. Just know, at least coming from me-- you're not the only one who has to say no. Sometimes, it's just nice to know you're not alone.  :)

*Side note and disclosure: This blog post is not an endorsement for Prosper.com or their services, nor are they a sponsor of Fetching Fashions. I know nothing about the soundness of the site (i.e. the use of peer-to-peer lending) but just feel that their desire for us to open up about financial responsibility was laudable and important.

Pretties.

What better way to deal with indecision and stress than to SHOP SHOPPITY SHOPEROO?

(Heh.)

I'm thinking about ordering this, but do I need another lacey item? It's sorta like my F21 lace skirt... hmm...

And I tried this on in store and love love LOVED it. Soooo cute. But they didn't have my size...
I did manage to get a F21 striped skirt (similar to this skirt but in grey and white with thinner stripes, and a bit longer), and a light denim jacket (which I've been eyeing to pair with more feminine outfits). Now I just need some spring-ey tops to pair with my fun new skirts...

And I've been eyeing Mink Pink lately-- anyone tried them? I love this dress, even though I have no freekin' clue where I'd wear it. Hmm. Shopping makes a Justine happy. And less headachey. Yep.  :)

OH. Also. Had to share this: I called the F21 today to find out about my hotly desired Silk Bow Dress, which I was told was in shipment and on it's way to the store for invoice this week. And come to find out, they're NOT getting the dress. (wtf, sales associate? Do you know how upset you've made me?! and yes the world DOES revolve around me! Duh!!) So this morning, it was sold out in small online and I was stuck in the same situation as last week and wanted to kick myself in the butt for not just jumping on it when I could. Almost as if it were meant to be, I checked the site again tonight for shits and giggles, and guess what lovies? There it was, in a small, in pink, staring at me in the face. So I wasted NOTIME and clicked purchase, along with this and this. Hey F21, you're like crack. Stop it. Or keep it up, I dunno, but I need more restraint. NO more F21 for me for a while; I need to be buying slightly higher quality from now on. End of story.
