Reivew: Personal Microderm Kit!

Hi all! I'm back from my temporary hiatus that has been due to the end of the semester (almost 1 year DOWN in my doctoral program! My how time flies...). I wanted to bring you a special review that I promised you several weeks back but am just getting some time to write up.

The lovely folks at Skincarerx (a sponsor of mine!) were kind enough to send me their Personal Microderm Kit (PMD). It's just like it sounds-- a microdermabrasion at home. For my honest opinion, they sent me one free of charge. So without further ado, here's my two cents.

1. I have used this nifty little product a few times now. I would have used it more, but as some might recall I have been seeing a dermatologist to get facial peels and laser treatments (more on that another time). Since that takes a week or so to heal, I can't use this until I'm totally back to normal. But, the times I have used it have been a good experience.

2. Before using, I watched a little video on how to operate the device. It comes with a small hand-held thinga-ma-jig (I use scientific terminology) and several coarse heads that do the dirty work of micro-derming. The heads vary in intensity of coarseness (I started with green, which is moderate, and will work up to blue, which is heavy-coarse). The head sizes are different, too-- small for face and large for larger areas, like hands or arms. I only used it for my face, as that's my area of most concern. Once I got a feel for how to do it, I jumped right in!

3. Using it is pretty simple. The trick is to get the head as tightly suctioned to your skin as possible so that the dermabrasion head can do it's job. That part is a little tough only because you have to pull your skin tightly with your hands to get it to work. Also, it's a little difficult getting certain parts of your face (like the bridge of your nose, for me at least).In terms of discomfort level, it's just slightly irritating. And once you get used to it, it's no big deal at all. Sort of just like someone is scratching your face slightly, which is completely bearable and no biggie.

4. Results: I wish I could show pictures but unfortunately with my peels and laser treatments, there's no way to show what just this PMD has done. But I can tell you the results were good... not great, but good. In terms of appearance, I didn't notice much difference. Maybe my face was slightly more radiant. In terms of skin texture, a big difference was noted. It really did feel like all the gross, dead skin was sloughed away... which is exactly what it's supposed to do! So, I would recommend using it for that purpose more so than for the appearance of your skin to drastically improve. Then again, others have had better results in appearance, so it probably depends.

Also, I really think that with regular use, appearance of the skin will get better. It's one of those things that I think will help maintain the youth of the skin rather than give immediate, amazing results. So because of that, I'm totally going to keep using it.

**OVERALL RATING OF PMD**: With everything considered, I rate this product a B+: relatively easy to use, not painful, decent results.... hoped improvement with long-term results.

That's all! Hope it's helpful to some of you considering purchasing a personal at home microderm kit. If you are, I would say this is a great one to buy.

Hi bloggies! It has been quite a busy time of the month for me, so I just want to check in on a few things:

3. Tomorrow, I'm going in for my first of three Dema Laser Peels. I'm pretty excited about doing this because I've been wanting to take care of my skin in a serious way for a long, long time. From what I've heard, they're not the most fun to undergo, but they give results. I will for sure share how it goes, my recovery time and experience. (Wish me luck!)

This is a long to do list. And I promise it will get done! Bare with me, folks. Maintaining my 4.0 is currently calling. :)

What I've been Shopping: Spring 2011

Yeeesh. It's been a while since I've actually posted a shopping post, let alone much of a post at all. It's cool that I've got some great GIVEAWAYS happening (well, one, and you can click here for it!), but I really should tell y'all about my world a little more often, hmmm? OK. Point taken. :)

It's been pretty warm in the Big D recently and it's seeming like this is a theme that will continue until... you know, like October. I've been on a big hunt for shorts. A few years ago, F21 carried the most amazing, best fitting, cutest cuffed twill shorts. I still have two pairs (white and black) but they're starting to wear out. Unfortunately for me, it doesn't seem F21 is wanting to sell these anymore (boo!), so I'm scouring the interwebs to find good replacements.

I tried these Pleated Linen shorts from ON, but I don't think I'm keeping them. The material is somewhat stiff and itchy. I really like soft, moveable shorts, and since these aren't that I'm sure they'd just sit in the closet. (But just in case otehrs are interested, they actually fit really well! Really cute, it's just too bad they're not softer.)

I just ordered these Plot Twist Shorts from Anthro, and while they're much dressier, I can see myself wearing them a lot. Let's just hope the silk doesn't become too much of a problem....

These shorts from AE (Favorite Shortie shorts) are also in the running, but the inseam looks dangerously small. 2.5" doesn't sound that bad, but you just never know. And I'm not in the business of showing my "Britney" off.

I've gotta thank the lovely Rosa for this top, since she scoured her local H&M to find it for me! Even though Dallas has an "H&M Preview Store" (the first and only of it's kind, ever!), we still don't get much stuff in. I saw the dress-version of this top in this month's InStyle and just had to get it... the mint green color is sooooo pretty and the cutouts add a fun detail. Isn't it cute? Kinda reminds me of Catherine Malandrino, with the floral print. I totally recommend if you can find it in your local H&M....

While I'm not usually one for lots of jewelry (I typically wear a neclace and that's about it), I found myself totally falling head over heels for Rachel Rachel Roy's amazing snake jewelry. So I know I've been totally bad lately re: outfit photos. This blog started with me wanting to show my outfits, and while I still do, it's just not a feasible goal anymore. I mean, the occasional outfit will get blogged, but it's just so dern time consuming! For any of you who blog or do outfit pictures, I think you'll agree-- getting the outfit just right, setting up the tripod, getting the camera settings just right, running back and forth 100 times to get 3 decent photos, then editing them and posting them? Whew. With my schedule, I just don't have the motivation. But sometimes an iPhone picture or two will make its way since its so much less high maintenance. Therefore, I have a sort-of-hard-to-see-cuz-lighting-sux photo for ya! Wahoo!

(Dear Apple, please let the iPhone 5 come out sooner than this summer, and please make the camera super-awesome and amaaazzzzing. Thanks.)

No, but really. The reason I'm even posting these horrible pictures is because I heart these jeans. I just bought them at Nordstrom in Dallas this past weekend, and they are the most perfect wide legged, bellbottomed light washed jeans ever. While they're not on the website yet, it seems the same pair in the khaki are. Super comfortable and super adorable. Plus, they're only $99, which is 1/2 the price of most designer denim (I also love my shoes, which you can see here... also pretty comfy!). I may even convert from a Hudson fan to a Level 99 fan (woah).

Today's pick is a new favorite of mine. I was in the Gap just this weekend and spotted these pretty flats on the racks. They are prettier in person than they are online and super comfortable. Gap's flats rarely seem to disappoint, so this is another great pair. The best part is they are sturdier than the City Flats but still manage to feel like slippers on. Bonus! When I bought them I was expecting to pay full price, but somehow they were 30% off in stores. A real steal, especially since my Tory Burch Caroline flats did NOT work out (I have the worst luck with that brand, seriously).

Over the years, I have morphed in terms of my shopping-style. Once an impulse-shopper only, I've shifted into a more strategic buyer. Honestly, I credit the internet for these changes. I mean, without online browsing, catalogs were my only means of keeping up. Especially when living in small-town America for lots of my life. So I'd go to the mall (the sad, pathetic excuse for a mall we had in Podunk, IL) and head straight for the Express, picking out new items when they'd reach the racks. We even had a personal shopper (yes, Express did this... even though it wasn't official. She knew us by name. Kinda embarrassing, really.).

But now that I'm on my own as a shopper/fashionista-in-training, much more interested in the trends, and running rampant in a shopping mecca (seriously... Northpark has it all!), I do find myself really researching before buying. Sure, there are still the "OMG I need that, yoink!" moments, but I really (really!) do try and make sure I know I want it when I buy it.

Take the blouse, for instance.

I know you've all heard me talking about buying an Equipment blouse for ages now. Classic piece! But definitely pricey for something so simple and replicable. Madewell did a great job of creating one, and even my tried and true Express did a fine job. And for the past many, many months, I've amassed lots of 'em. I love them all dearly and wear them to death-- a blouse is sort of my go-to outfit these days, my uniform of sorts. But something about the Equipment ones said quality to me the others haven't quite matched. Well, readers... I finally pulled the trigger! And this long, self-indulgent post regarding pining for a blouse ends with this.

So here's the scoop. I've always said I have no beauty IQ and that it's just not my forte. This is pretty true. However, I've always had issues with my skin. I break out with cystic acne much more than I would like (um, not that anyone would ever want to, but you get it) and it's been practically untreatable most of my life. Every doctor I've seen has put me on antibiotics and topicals, which just don't cut it. I finally went to see a doctor (dermo) last week for the first time in ages. I was so pleased that I did! Finally a doctor that seems to understand my skincare needs and doesn't think drying me out even more is the way to go. So, here's a quick little update on my new beauty/skincare regimen. (Consider this a new-year's resolution, of sorts...)

-- I'm using an antibacterial face wash in the mornings called RE-10 wash. It's also helping with my redness!
-- I'm using a topical antibiotic (doesn't dry me!) called Clindamycin at night.
-- I'm taking Sprionolactone to work at the hormonal level, since my acne isn't really due to bacteria as much as it is stress/hormonal imbalance.

And I've definitely stocked up on nice, new products. Ones not from the drug store (which are not a problem, but honestly, I just could never find any facial cream/wash that ever worked for me):

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream ($28)

Ladies? This was a miracle on my dry skin. Literally, I went from flaking and scaly to moisturized practically overnight. Not only does this work at the surface level to help with flakiness, it gets into the skin to moisturize and heal at a deeper level. I love it and totally recommend it-- good for all over the body.

Philosophy Purity Facial Cleanser ($32 for 16 oz)

This has been nice and gentle on my face. My only hesitation on buying it again is that it doesn't do the best job in taking off my makeup-- I still need an eye makeup remover to get the excess mascara off. Otherwise, I do like it!

And finally, I'm waiting to receive two products that seem to be highly lauded: Peter Thomas Roth's Unwrinkle Peel Pads and his Mega Rich Intensive Anti-Aging Cellular Creme (mouthful.). I'm excited to report back on how those work when I receive them.

So, anyone agree with me on those products? Disagree? Recommendations?

Springing Forward: Coral Hues

I am officially on day 5 of snow-day-Dallas. Last week, school was closed 4 days, and this week, it's been closed at least once. I don't know about you, but I am ready for Spring to spring!!

In honor of the warm, mild and sunny dreams I'm having, I thought I'd post a little inspiration board featuring my fave spring hue: Coral. I love this tone because, while orange, bright pink and yellow always seem to be problematic for certain skin tones, coral has enough brown tones to it that lots of people can pull it off (bonus when you're super-tan!). Not-OOTD: Snow day!

So, just like about 40% of the nation, I'm having my second snow-day today in good ole' Texas. Yep. Snow day, in Texas. Poor Superbowl guests, hoping for sun and fun and getting sheets of ice and snow instead. It's pretty horrific around here, but I can't complain. I haven't had school yet this week!

And since I've not been able to leave the house, you'll understand why no current outfits are to be had. However, I realized I had one old outfit to share with you. It makes me pine for the days of 55 degree weather we should be having right now. *Le sigh.* I think the reason it was never posted is because I'm not that crazy about it. It's a little casual and the cord leggings just never did me right. I bought them waaaay back when Nordies did their fall pre-sale and thought they would rock. Instead, they just look like too-tight pants. Win some, lose some, eh?

Also, I have some great news to share. Over the past few weeks, I've become more and more committed to skin care and beauty products. I know, I know-- I am a confessed beauty idiot, but my changing and aging skin is starting to push me towards paying more attention to it. I've changed up my skin care regimen and have been really pleased with the results so far (less flakiness and redness! Wahoo!) So, it was crazy-timely when Skincarerx.com and Apothica.com contacted me this week about sponsorship. While the details are still being worked out, it does mean one thing for Fetching Fashions: more beauty/skincare reviews and discussions worked in with my love of fashion! Nail-time!

As I've previously confessed, my beauty skillz = nill. But, I make up for it in nail-knowledge. This weekend I have some fun plans and decided I needed fun nails to go with. I painted them with Lincoln Park After Midnight (a slightly purple-er shade of LPAD) and then... drumroll please... used Sally Hansen's Salon Effects nail strips on my ring fingers (looks like you can buy them online at ebay, here). I really wanted to try them after reading some reviews and seeing some ads but wasn't wanting to commit to a full set of nails with designs. My solution was to just do one on each hand for a little surprise. I think it's fun, and definitely a special-occasion-only look. What do you think? Tacky or trendy???

As for the product itself, I really like it! I am excited to see how long it lasts, since I've read reviews that say they can last as long as 2 weeks. I'm sure it will long outlive my manicure, which usually has a lifespan of 4-5 days on my hands. Ugh. If you look close at the last photo, you'll notice I messed up a bit at the cuticle by messing with it too much, but it's still not too noticeable. While it's a pretty easy process, I will say a steady hand is helpful.

I rarely wear this faux-fur vest from The Limited because it just sort of overtakes the outfit. However, I've seen it on other bloggers (so cute here on Krystal!) and decided to wear it despite its largeness. Honestly, I think it looks ok, now that I'm seeing it in photos. Maybe I've changed my mind on it, after all.

Also. The semester has begun in full force! Which means more of Justine trying her hardest-and-darndest to keep up with FF. But I'm committed, so no worries. Just be nice when I'm a sporadic-blogger again. I know, I can't stand it either. But my degree (and mounting debt) calls. :)

I'm really really happy that lace is on-trend for spring. I'll say it once, I'll say it again: I heart lace. I know I'm becoming a broken record so I apologize. When I saw how Shopbop styled this Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent dress I just had to have it for myself (plus a little sale price never hurts!).

Every once in a while, I'll find myself grabbing pieces for an outfit and realizing, "Hey. This is all anthropologie stuff." Sometimes I feel a little geeky and will change so I'm not wearing 100% one brand, but sometimes I'll say the heck with it and wear it proudly. Today was the latter.

Re: the blouse. I know a lot of reviewers thought it was way too boxy, and it's true. It's quite boxy. However, I really like my silk blouses to be light, airy and loose, so it's perfect. Plus I'm a layering whoooor, so again, it works. Re: the jeans. These things are like a glorified jegging and are ahhhhmazing! I totally recommend, especially at under $100. They are just as nice, if not nicer, than my expensive designer jeans. Just what I was looking for.

1. Current/Elliott distressed skinny jeans, size 24. Sold for $85 shipped.

Never altered but have been worn a handful of times (washed a few, too). These jeans are currently sold on Revolve and are an Editor's Pick on Shopbop (here) for $216. I am obsessed with them-- they are a great weight, are really soft and comfy, but alas. They don't fit me. While the tag reads 24, they would fit a size 25/26 perfectly. They are just a bit too tight on me. Boo. I'm sad to see these go but they need a good home.

2. Anthropologie (ca. 2006, probably) Sparrow wool vest, size S. Sold for $30 shipped.

I really can't remember when this vest was around but it was definitely several years ago. I love it and wore it here, but I just haven't worn it in a while, so out it goes. It's used but in great condition-- nothing wrong with it at all.

~~3. Nordstrom T.B.D. Jacket, unknown brand, size XS.~~ ~~Sold for $35 shipped.~~ SOLD

Another jacket I love! It's very Anthro-inspired and the detailing is fabulous. I can't decipher the brand name... looks like the tag says "Tm," but I have no idea. This was purchased around Christmas time in 2008. Worn a few times but also in pristine condition.

4. WHBM Silk geometric print dress, size 0. Sold for $35 shipped.

I wore this dress twice-- once for a wedding and once for my rehearsal dinner. It's in great condition with no marks or spots at all. It's 100% silk and really pretty.

5. French Connection flowy top, size S. Sold for $25 shipped.

I purchased this at a Bloomingdales in 2008. It's really cute and fits well. It's been worn a handful of times but again, like all my stuff, is in great condition.

6. F21 dress, size S. Sold for $20 shipped.

I wore this to a fashion event once (see below) and love it but it needs a better home. It's also in great condition.

7. Anthropologie Tabitha Short & Sweet Jacket, green, size 2.

I'm willing to entertain an offer on this jacket. I'm not sure I want to part with it, but if anyone out there is dying for it, I'm listening. :)

OOTD/Review: Gap Wide Leg trousers

A few posts back, I talked about how much I'm loving the 70's vibe 2011 has to offer, specifically wide leg pants. I bought the Gap Perfect khaki pants in slate grey (pavement). Technically, these aren't advertised as wide-leg, but from the product shot they sure look like it.

Review: While they are wide leg, they are not super wide leg. They are mostly straight leg with a little wideness. Which is okay, even though I was hoping they would fit slightly wider. Overall I do like them a lot. I chose pavement as a color because I thought khaki was too prep for me and white was not an option when I purchased. They sit low on the waist (8 or so inch rise) and are a pretty great inseam for me. They also come in short and tall. I bought a size 2, which was initially too big but after a wash and dry they're great. The 0 was a little to snug, pulling at the front too much. Therefore, I'd say they're pretty TTS.

Hope that helps anyone who was thinking about buying. Also, stay tuned tomorrow for a little blog sale for the new year. I've got some Anthro pieces for sale, a pair of wonderful jeans and some other goodies. :)

In all seriousness, I heart this sweater. I spotted it when it was full price on J.Crew's site but I rarely buy online because of their crazy-ridiculous shipping prices (no, I don't want to add another $100 to my cart to save $15 in your insane shipping prices. Grrr). When I went into the store after Christmas I saw it on sale for $49, but I still just wasn't biting. After many a passing thought about it, I saw it yesterday for the $49 plus 40% off so I finally bit. Yay! The color is such a great warm tone despite its boogery-ness. And with pink, it's perfect. Good thing I have a few more shirts in the same pink/mauve tone to pair it with.

Also, I realized all of the things I'm wearing were bought on a good bargain, making this outfit come to about $150 rather than the full price, which I calculated to be around $500 (that is when you consider what an original pair of CV wedges cost! OK, so I cheated.).

OOTD: Remixing the NYE dress

On NYE, I wore this Rory Beca silk dress (sold out in purple) because it was the perfect combo of casual and dressy. Since my new year's festivities were pretty simple, I decided to wear something I knew I would be able to wear in other ways. Here's my quick, first shot at re-styling it (although I think the choice of blazer may not have been ideal. I'll do better next time). Pretty go to for me: leggings and a blazer to finish it off. I'm way too predictable. :)

Dallas has really yet to see coat weather save for a few days and some chilly nights. Compared to last year (e.g. 2 snowstorms BEFORE Christmas!), the weather has been great for dress-wearing. Score.

Happy New Year's Day! Did you enjoy your NYE? The hubs and I had a nice dinner and headed to a house-party afterwards. It was relaxed and nice-- just what I prefer.

Of course, once holiday sales settle down, it's time to start thinking spring fashion and more importantly, new trends for 2011! If one thing's for certain in fashion this year it's this: the 70's are back! Love it or not (for the record, I love it), retro styles will fill our racks this spring. My fave 70's trend that will be back in full force is the wide leg pant. Generally flattering on most body-types, these trousers will come in various shapes and sizes but will shine in the most basic form-- stove-pipe legs, straight down from the hip to your shoe. Here are a few of my picks!

1. The affordable classic: Gap's wide leg trousers

I ordered these in the slate color, which I think will go great with tons of items in my closet. I'll report on how they look when they arrive.

2. The high waist: Topshop's Tobacco belted wide leg

I totally heart the color on these! Definitely a retro classic.

3. The wide leg denim: Hudson Woodstock wide leg

I love this brand because the denim is always soft and not too thick. I bet these are adorable in person. (also, don't forget an exaggerated flare denim for this season!)

4. The cute, comfy pants: Patterson J. Kincaid Jennalyn Chambray wide legs

I love these and bet they would be great to lounge in or run errands with a tee and cardi. Cute!

Given that it is almost NYE and we are embarking on a new year, I thought my outfits should reflect that. While I really only wore this around the house today (don't make fun.), I did actually wear this for my husband's 32nd birthday at a cute little Parisian bistro down the street from us.

(p.s., saying my husband just turned 32 makes me feel a little old, especially when I was casually told by a peer at school that 30s are "actually middle-aged." Vom.)

I have been into lace recently and really like the chic and uber-feminine style of this. The jacket was a great purchase because I was dying for a new black blazer (I think I had a blazer in every color except for black, until now). How cute are the tuxedo-esque details? My bow belt is sort of my bow tie replacement, methinks. :) Re: the bracelet-- I'll show it in more detail in another outfit soon because it's just the coolest thing ever, but this is all ya get right now. (it was my Christmas present from hubs!)

Hope all my lovely readers had a great Christmas holiday... and hopefully you're still enjoying it. I have this whole week off from work before I go back on the 3rd, so I am trying to live it up while I can. It seems like most of Dallas has the same perk too-- the malls and restaurants were packed today. No matter-- I had a great day nonetheless.

It was especially nice to wake up to a Shopbop promo: 20% off all sale items (code 20MORE)! I didn't get to take advantage of the last promo they had so I was pleased to take advantage of it... twice... today. :) Here were my purchases-- both of which sold out in my size after I bought them (that always seems to make me more glad I pulled the trigger when I did!). Merry Christmas eve (and Christmas, for thoe reading several hours from now)! I hope everyone is relaxing and having a grand ole' time this weekend. Hubs and I are in New Jersey and are spending quality time with family. Unfortunately for me, I came down with a cold (boo), but nothing will dampen my holiday spirit!

While I have nothing new to share with you for outfits, I figured I would pick one of my faves from the archives. While there are many outfits from the past I love and hate, I remember feeling rather clever when I put this one together. A little pop of lace goes a long way with a hot pink cashmere sweater dress... :)

There's also something fun about looking back at old pictures. It's hard to believe, but I've had this little ole' bloggie-blog for over a year now, and it's just fun to see where my sense of fashion has moved. I'd say since this picture, I've gotten a little more muted in my color palatte and a little less feminine. Nonetheless, I still like this outfit and might just pull it out again for old times sake. (Cue reminiscent music.)

AG Jeans... for sale!

Hey ladies! A quick post to see if anyone is interested in a pair of AG jeans, size 27, worn only once. Never altered. I love this brand tons and tons and hate to part with them, but they've been sitting in my closet, unworn... so I would like to find them a loving home. :)

Description: These jeans are AG Stilt skinnies in 2Y Wash. They originally retailed at $210 and I would like to sell them for $75 (Price is negotiable!!). As I said, never altered, so the inseam is still appx. 31 inches. The rise is low but not very low- it's probably 8.5" or so. A great, classic pair.

It's no secret that Groupon had a fantastic deal last week for $25 for $50 at Nordstrom Rack. "Great!", I thought. "Perfect for holiday shopping!" Ummm... yeah... about that.

I tried, readers. I really tried to find those holiday gifts. But none were to be found that would be good enough for my gift-recipients. I thought all was lost for said gift-certificate, until I spotted this little pretty in the racks. The Nanette Lepore Maddalena jacket seems to be sold out almost everywhere (might be from Fall '09?), and I remember this on Nordie's site a while back. Unfortunately, $500 is out of my budget for a blazer, but when it's on sale for $199 + $50 off? Yes, please. And I'm pleased (and a little shocked) to announce that this is my first ever Nanette purchase. I say shocked because I really don't know why I haven't bought something sooner...

OOTD: the warm before the cold.

Here in Dallas, weather is... strange. Come October, a chill begins to set in, crispness fills the air. But then, some sort of warm front inevitably comes in... and out, and in and out. Until around January, when the air is just cold, cold, cold. Most people don't think Dallas can get cold. But let me tell you-- it can. Trust me. It's funny to hear the northerners who move here for school or work and tell me, "I had no idea it could get this cold!" Yep. It does.

Anyway, right now is one of those warms before the cold. Before I must wear tights (to my chagrin). So I'm takin' advantage, people! It's skirt-sans-tight time!

A while back, I posted about how I would like a shorter boot with a wedge. I was lucky to have scored the last pair of ROSEGOLD Sandra convertible boots when Shopbop did their huge winter markdowns. Rockin'. Overall, I love them and will keep them, but here are some notes (especially since it doesn't seem there are any reviews of these out there...) :

The Good:
-They fit great. I have a hard time with shoes because my size seems to fluctuate anywhere between an 8 and a 9. This makes online shoe shopping hell. But, these are 8.5s and are perfect. I believe that to be my true size; therefore, I'll call these TTS.
-They are comfortable! I bet I could walk through the mall with minimal discomfort.

The Bad:
- They are really tough to get on and off. The zipper is stiff and doesn't like to move around. Which is good in one sense, because it means it won't move around when I have them zipped up or down. But to get these on, you MUST roll them all the way up, unzip, zip half way, then roll back down. Sheesh.
-There is some weird black crap that gets all over my hands when I touch the zipper. Its not the leather-- it's something that is obviously coating the zipper to make it the dark metallic color it is. I could have done without that, thanks.

The Inbetween:
-I like platform for ultimate comfort, and these are not platform. Therefore, while comfy, I do expect a little arch and ankle discomfort as the day wears on. Que sera sera.
-They look pretty bad uncuffed (on me). The calf width is too much for my small calf and they hit at a weird place at the bottom of my knee. This isn't too much of a problem for me since I bought them with the intention of wearing them mainly cuffed. That was the style I was going for.

OVERALL: I recommend, as long as you're looking for a cuffed, wedge boot that is sleek and classic. Buy on sale, since I think there might be at least comparable cuffed wedge boots in the full price range ($275). I'm sure with wear, these will just get better. Yippee!

Woah, woah. Is Justine doing two -- count 'em, TWO -- OOTDs in one week? It must be that Christmas magic in the air.

I thought I would try a new venue-- my front porch. If there's one thing I've learned about my point-and-shoot digital camera it's that it takes shoddy indoor photos. Its true abilities come out only in natural, bright light. Since I had a few minutes to spare this morning (skipping classes will do that for ya. Ooops.) I thought I'd try it on for size. Personally... me likey.

Happy almost-Thanksgiving! What is everyone doing this year? I'll be frying two turkeys... no, scratch that. Husband will be frying two turkeys. I'm pretty excited. But there are pressing matters before all this jazz.

Holiday nail polish.

I've never been one for beauty products, but when it comes to nail polishes, I'm a bit of a freak. I never get professional manicures because after a few days, I'm ready to try something else. This holiday season, I'm trying to find the perfect sparkly manicure that doesn't look like I just stepped out of a stripper bar. So, I could take a few opinions. Here are my sparkly, holiday options:

Left to right: ULTA Twilight (shimmery without specks of glitter); Sephora by OPI Looks Like Rain Dear (shimmer and glitter specks); Essie Hot Coco (opaque brown/taupe color); and Sephora by OPI Already Famous (taupey, shimmery goodness)

Of course, to get the perfect manicure, I layered. Below are the outcomes... which do you like best? (Granted, they look quite similar... but they are all different.)

3. Twilight with one layer of Already Famous

Sooooo, since I don't have any nice, well-lit photos on my digital camera re: recent outfits, I must resort to iPhone pics of some outfits I've worn and liked. Quality sucks, so I apologize, but hey. It's a step in the right direction, yes? :) I'll be working on getting some good pics this weekend since it should be relatively slow, and I do have some fun, new pieces I'd love to play around with. Weird thing I've noticed: putting together outfits when you have little to no intention to put them out in cyberspace is a bit easier. It's strange, really, since you'd think the motivation would be decreased, therefore the outfits less thought out. But it's been the opposite: since I'm not worried about creating the "perfect" outfit for my blog, I'm less critical of every detail and a bit more free-flowing. I think I ought to try not trying so hard... if that makes sense.

It's a shame you can't see the full outfit in the last pic because I just loved it. The skirt is possibly the best thing ever. Might be my fave inexpensive item in my current rotation.

Thanks for the comments re: my recent posting (or lack thereof). I agree-- the OOTDs must be reinstated to some degree. I may have to baby-step my way back in-- AKA iPhone pictures for now. I do have a few already stored on my phoney-phone so I'll upload those in an effort to show y'all what I've been wearing. Let's face it-- that's what most of us come to fashion blogs for, no?

With Bloomie's 20% off for F&F time (through November 14th), I decided it was due time to make an order. Even though I actually bought these Blank Denim cargos a long time ago, a sad mishap with bleach rendered them unwearable. Ugh. Fortunately, I re-purchased them at a discount, which makes life a little easier, no?

And I couldn't resist this... a blardigan (by Aqua, Bloomie's contemporary/cheap house brand)! Perfect in cashmere, plus it will look super cute with a maxi skirt like this one (which I purchased and totally love!).

Debating:

I have been wanting a new, comfortable day dress recently, and I love that this Free People dress could go either day or night. But, is it that cute? Not sure... any thoughts on what I should do? Buy or don't buy?

I heart this Steve Madden Berllinn boot. It looks comfortable and chic.. I love how the cuff is not scrunched like lots of other cuffed boots are right now. I'll be waiting on a sale for these, though... or maybe Santa will bring them? Hmm?

Where in the heck did October go? Seems like I closed my eyes and here's November already! I won't apologize for the break, not because I don't care about my readers but because it's just par for the course at the moment. It's weird moving from being a daily blogger to a when-I-get-a-second blogger, and I hope you will all bear with me! I've definitely had moments of just calling it all quits, but something stops me. For now, I'll have to be okay with being a bit sporadic, which kind of sucks for my readers. But I'm not giving up just yet! :)

It's getting a little chilly (finally) here in Dallas, so I've been able to bust out some cozy pieces. My fave so far has been my BB Dakota Branson sweater jacket, (on sale at Shopbop now). I totally recommend-- it's crazy soft and warm and is perfect a substitute for a coat. At least when temps are above 35 degrees! (

And my most recent purchase/birthday gift? New sunglasses (since my Diors tragically broke whilst getting shoved into my school bag. Ooops.) :

I love these babies-- not too big, not too small, and the color is just right for my skin tone/hair. The shape is bordering on the cat-eye shape, but it's much less pronounced. Purrrrfect. :)

And my smartest purchase? Has to be the AG Stilt denim in 2Y wash... (shown below in the Orlin wash)

For any gals out there like me (ahem, lacking curves), AG is a great fit. Only second to Hudson and the cute triangle pockets, in my opinion.

It sort of feels like my style personality has done some shifting since I started this blog over a year ago. My natural inclination is to overdose on frills, embellishments and girly details. But with the start of school and my seriously-serious desire to be comfortable at all times, practicality has set in. Therefore, I've been on this one month long search for the perfect pair of flats. My perfect pair would be an amalgamation of a pointed toe, a feminine detail, real leather and a trendy element. So I started with leopard, thinking that I could really use a little more animal in my life (ha.). I bought these Nordstrom BP leopard print flats in an effort to be stylish, simple and economical, but honestly? They just hurt my toes within 5 minutes of wear.

I then spotted these, which I thought were a nice combo of edgy and feminine. But I couldn't help but wonder-- do they walk the line of an 80-year old Grandma? Guess it didn't help that the reviews I found on Nordie's site were all from 45 years older and up. Hmmm.

I really sifted through the options, utilizing the ever-practical Shopstyle search but still came up flat. (oh yes I did just say that.) Then, searching through the bowels of Shopbop (always comes to the rescue!), I found these seriously-reminiscent Miu Miu lookalikes... and although economical isn't really a word I can use to describe them, PERFECT is.

Thanks to a few Shopbop gift cards and an understanding husband, I found my new fall flats. I think I can even say I like my Vera Wangs more than the Miu Mius! The silken bow is a nice touch, and I love mixing textures. Plus this dove grey color is insane in person. Oh, and the soft leather is crazy-comfy, too. For anyone looking for a great fall flat (and willing to spend a bit of dough), I definitely recommend. Who says I must abandon my frilly ways for comfort? Miss Vera, you've proved me wrong.

As many of you who have read my blog for some time know, Shopbop + me = true love (coincidentally, it also = true brokeness, but whatevs). My wishlist is always full at any given time and I'm constantly editing it. Because the stock over there is so extensive, it sorta helps me keep my trend-priorities in line. Do I want a leopard print bootie or a military trench? Even if I don't end up getting half of what's on there, it helps me think about what I really want to indulge in and what I think I can live without (or find a cheaper version somewhere).

A sad thing has happened since I began school (besides the extra 10 poudns I've gained from eating pizza rolls nightly)-- I've pretty much stopped wearing heels. I love the lace up boot look, so I thought these were a great option. Only problem is, they may be a teense too literal on the military trend, plus I honestly have a hard time imagining how my closet would make these work.

On the Hunt: The Cape

In early August, I began my hunt for fall clothes. I did this because I had no idea what the money situation would be like with me back in school. So I bought a few essentials: a new strong-shouldered blazer, a chunky knit sweater, cord leggings, cargo skinnies, an oversized blouse (or two)...

But now that we can officially start thinking about fall (well, most of YOU can. I'm still sweating my tooshie off here in Dallas) and more trends have emerged, it's about that time to re-evaluate wishlists and figure out what's missing from my closet. The one thing I must say I really want and don't yet have? The cape.

Not sure about y'all, but the cape seems like the perfect topper for cool weather. Warm and cozy, like a blanket with arm holes (snuggie-capes?). Bonus points because they work better with puffy sleeved blouses than do traditional coats with narrow sleeves. Here are my top 3 picks!

Afternoon, lovies! One thing I've been meaning to do and thinking about since I took my little hiatus is this product review from a great online accessories boutique called Shop The Look. The fab ladies over there contacted me a while back asking me if I'd like to review some things of theirs, and since they stock cute, trendy pieces, I could not say no. Shop the Look has been featured in tons of magazines we all know and love (Lucky, Redbook, InStyle, hellooo!!) and always feature affordable baubles that look like the real thing. Here's what I reviewed:

Mixed Rocker Cuff, $14

I thought the necklace looked so much like that Anthropologie necklace that was out this summer (whose name I'm blanking on at the moment), but I really liked the mix of metallics and neutrals this one offered. It's super cute with anything from jeans and a tee to a LBD. (EDIT: I was wrong to say the necklace is sold out-- it's actually ON SALE for under $8! grab it up, peeps!) Plus, I love me a good cuff, and the Rocker cuff is just what I need to spice up an outfit. The one little drawback I found? The clasp is a bit hard to maneuver on the necklace, but once it's on it's not a problem. Otherwise, quality seems great, especially for such inexpensive pieces.

Hi bloggie-land! I am still alive! This is good news, as there were moments in the past 3 weeks that I questioned whether that would be the case. Not sure I was prepared for the stress of graduate school, since my Master's program was pretty easy, while this Ph.D. thing sort of feels like my eyelashes are being ripped out one by one, veeeerrrrryyyy slowly. Hyperbolic? Yes... but sadly, it's how I've been feeling. I know it's just an adjustment period, and YES, I will make it out alive *this is my mantra*.

(p.s., to those thinking about going to get a graduate degree... umm... forget what I said! It's wonderful! La-dee-da, YAY. (believable? I'm trying.))

I'm thinking I'm beginning to regain that groove I was talking about but it's still lagging a tad, so bare with me. But there are some things I need/want to attend to with y'all, so I'm jumping back into the world of blogging. I have been bad and have essentially taken a total hiatus from social media, including reading others blogs, using twitter, etc... so I apologize if you've tried to contact me and haven't gotten adequate response. But I promise I'm regaining my footing in the real world. Promise!

How Justine Got Her Groove Back

So.

It has become clear this week that this whole grad school thing is a lot.... I mean A LOT... more intense than originally expected. Ugh. I know it will get better once I get back into my groove, but that groove still seems far down the road. Therefore, I must make the difficult decision to take a 2 week hiatus from this little blog. As you may have noticed, I've really slowed down in posting recently, and honestly, I just dont have the extra mental energy at the moment to devote to it. I'm taking 14 credit hours, which is tough for an undergraduate let alone a doctoral student. I hate making these excuses, but at the same time, I can't force myself to stretch any more than I'm already expected.

But I will be back! I promise. I just have to take care of the things that require most of my attention; namely, sleep, food, homework, husband (probably, unfortunately, in that order!). And I'll still be reading, lovies. So those of you who blog may become my needed break from this work.

And hopefully, once I essentially "get my groove back," I'll be fresh and rested for some fun new things for us here at Fetching Fashions. So until then... ;)

I have not forgotten.

This, my dear lovies, is how I spent the weekend: purchasing a new (used) car. The decision was a tough one.

No, wait. It wasn't. You know why? Our budget was minuscule and our options were, too (had a small chunk of change from the accident settlement and we didn't want a car payment). We only needed a car with decent highway gas mileage to get me through the next 4-5 years until we can get something new and more custom. So this is what we ended up with.

2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder (not my exact car but it's the same thing)

My 17-year old self would be soooo jealous of me right now. Don't get me wrong-- it's a good car. Not many miles and kept up well. Plus a warranty if something goes wrong. But what's a self-respecting almost-26-year old doing with a teenager's dream?

(Sigh.)

When I was a teen living in Peoria, Illinois, there wasn't much to do for fun on the weekends. But the 19-year old boys (ow ow!) would take their "souped" up cars to the AMC down the street and essentially compare their genitals. Inevitably, half the cars in the lot were Spyders... which I thought was the coolest, raddest thing ever. So I can't help but feel a little regressed driving this thing to and from school, an 88-mile daily commute. Hey, the bright side is it's going to be a nice ride once the temps cool down, right? And it's definitely a lot cuter than the 4-door sedan we used to drive. Maybe I can get away with it since I pretty much look the same as I did when I was 17, right?

As if by miracle, Dallas had a cold front come through yesterday! It was amazing. 75 degrees and I almost considered the need for a sweater. It might not sound "cold' to some of you, but I cannot tell you how grateful I was to step outside in jeans (!!) and not sweat right through them. Getting in my car was not like walking through the gates of hell! Whooooppeee!!

I am quite intrigued, by the way, with this box hair color. Hmmm. I'm still ok with it considering the cost! But about this top... I've worn it before with shorts but I just love the way it looks with a fancy necklace and jeans. So cute! Plus it will be great with a chunky sweater when the temps get even colder than 75, sort of like they did on the product page of Nordie's site. (Which I'm not a huge fan of after the change. Thoughts?)

I have worn the bejeezus out of these shorts this year, lemme tell ya. One of my best purchases to date, I think! I got them a year ago at F21 and bought a pair in white and tan as well. Somehow, the tan ones stopped fitting after one season but the white and black ones have kept up with my incessant wear/wash schedule. With a record 24 days of over 100-degree temperatures, shorts are a necessity. Thankfully, there really are a plethora of ways to wear them, but I tend to wear them with a tank and sandals. Maybe I can style them a bit more interestingly once the weather cools down (I'll even take a 90-degree day! please?).

Also also, thanks to all who were so kind on twitter to send me well wishes. For those of you who didn't see via my tweets, hubsters and I were involved in a car wreck on Sunday that totaled hubs' car. We're all ok, minus a little neck and back ache. We're hoping to simply get the money from the other car's insurance company and get the same car, used. See, the car hubs had was all paid off, so getting a new one would mean incurring another bill (which we really don't need!). So cross yers fingers that we can find a nice (old) Honda in a used car lot somewhere around here.

Also also also (ahem), T-minus 6 days until my first day back to school in two years. It simultaneously feels like forever and feels like yesterday since I last attended a class, so I'm anxious to get back into the student groove. I don't really know what to expect, but I do know that it's going to be quite a 5 year ride! Here's to living the student life! :)

The Cargo pant: my pick...

So a few days ago, I posted about the Cargo pant trend for this fall and decided to indulge myself with a pair. The ones I ultimately decided on were the Blank Denim skinny cargo pant in Army. The choice was easy-- the price, fabric, style and retailer (ahem, free shipping and no tax, hellloooo Shopbop!) made it a no-brainer. I was a little worried that they wouldn't work, but lo and behold, it's love at first sight! Here's a quick review:

I got a size 27, which promptly sold out hours after I purchased (I kinda love when that happens!). One weird little annoyance: they smelled funky when I opened the package. It's probably the fact that they sat in the heat for days whilst being shipped, but still... a strange, sour smell. They're currently in the wash and I'm sure the odd odor will go away, so no biggie.

The detailing is super cute. The pockets are on the side rather than the front, which is my preference. The zippers near the calf go up to the knee, which would make it difficult to hem if you're a shortie. These are just the right length on my 5'6 frame, if not just a teense too long. So that's a consideration. There are some tabs and non-functional zippers placed horizontally at the back of the knee (the knee-pit?). Overall, just really cute and comfortable! The material is super stretchy, which is a plus in my books, and really soft. I can't wait to wear these when the weather cools a little.

Also in the mail today was my BB Dakota Branson sweater. Ladies, fear not the kinda-poor product shots and baggy look of this sweater. It is adorable in person, really soft and chunky and right on trend for this fall. Way more expensive looking/feeling than the $40 I paid. Get one while you can! Its sure to be a staple in my closet, I just know it.

I must say, I totally disagree with Cafe Mom's appraisal of the preview... The prints are, overall, pretty cute, and I love the butterfly dress and the diamond print dress. I might just have to hit it up tomorrow if things are still available.

Also, I disagree that Target should team up with well-known designers. If I remember correctly, the whole point of the diffusion lines was to discover new, up and coming designers and help them get their name out there. Now, we have not been seeing that lately (JPG? not so new or up and coming...), but I think Tucker by Gaby Basora was a great change of pace.

The J Brand Houlihans blew up bigger than Heidi Montag's boobies this spring, and they're back again (the cargos... not the boobs. Those are here for good, I think). I held off for a while, lovies, because I was super worried about what to wear with them. I mean, I have quite a girly aesthetic... cargo pants? Not so much. But with more and more designers releasing their take, I just may have taken the plunge for fall. My only caveat= that they be skinny cargos rather than the loosey-goosey parachute-material type cargos. Here are some of my picks (most of which are under $100, because let's face it-- I ain't paying that much for cargos):

Easy Money Coin cargo jeans

These were by far my favorites that I've tried on so far. Soooo soft and comfortable, plus flattering on the toosh. I did find them to run a little small (I could wear the 28s!), but nonetheless a great option.

Blank Denim skinny cargos

Blank has a great reputation for fun, trendy pants. I've yet to try these on, but hey-- Kim Kardashian wears them! The zipper detail is adorable on the front pockets, and I like how the leg zippers are on the inside, rather than the outside, of the leg.

Level 99 cargos
I liked these when I tried them on at Anthropologie, but these seem to run a little large. The 25s were best on me.

Victoria's Secret London Jean cargo
Not sure you can beat the price, and the product image makes them look a lot like the J Brand Houlihans. I haven't seen these in person but they look like they could be a great buy!

INC ankle zip cargo
I love most everything INC does because it's usually a nice price and quality material. These seem a bit more streamlined and a little less fatigue-like to me, which makes me like them more, and may be best for those who are still hesitant about the trend in general (kinda like me!).

I've been way slacking on OOTD posts, this I know. Here's the excuse: have you checked the temps out there? I mean, Dallas has had 110 heat indices for about 3 weeks now. At first, I could handle it. Now I'm over it, and frankly, if I can get from my car to an air conditioned building without sweat stains on my clothes it's a success. I wish I were exaggerating but it's the gods-honest-truth. Yuck.

I had this outfit in the archives from before I went to DC. Actually, I wore this dress on our first night there and have yet to wear it for the blog. I bought it originally for my bridal shower last summer and thought it was the perfect thing to wear to something summery and bridal-ey, but the great thing is that it's just plain great to wear anytime. Minus the sweat stains. :)

Option 1. Purchasing cute BB Dakota Branson sweater jacket on Shopbop for $85.

Option 2. Purchasing same exact jacket on Lulu's for $41. (No contest. Sorry.)

How is this possible? The same thing, at more than half-price difference. I've seen some minor price differences with some sites ($5 here, $3 there...). But a $44 dollar difference? You could buy two of them for the same price that Shopbop wants to charge us for one, AND have $3 left over for a soda and candy bar. Eeesssh.

Man.

We've been having freezer problems since last week. We thought it would be ok! Call service guy, quick fix, okay. But the Best Buy Geek Squad dude came by yesterday (did you know the Geek Squad handles freezer emergencies? Neither did I...) and said we'd have to order parts, and if that didn't work, we'll have to get a new one. And wait for another week until they can get someone to fix this already one week old problem. And allllll that food that's spoiled? Well, we'll give you a few bucks towards the spoilage. Even though your wedding cake is in there and it is now an official carrier of some sort of food poisoning that will wreak havoc in your intestines. Great.

Ahem. So what's a girl to do? Make vodka tonics to deal with the stress that ironically have no ice in them because... wait for it... THERE IS NO ICE IN OUR 52 DEGREE FREEZER.

In less than 1 month, I'm starting school. Yay! I'm super thrilled about being a student again, but as I've mentioned, this comes with sacrifices. Namely, my shopping budget. As it is right now, I receive a set amount of money per month to shop with-- starting September, I'll have no budget at all. That doesn't mean I can't shop; it simply means that any shopping I do has to be 1) something we can afford and 2) something I really need/will wear a lot. Even though this doesn't technically start for another month, I've been preparing my fall closet for the last few weeks in anticipation of the lifestyle change. Thought I'd do a quick post of things I've recently gotten, to show you how I'm shaping up my fall style and wardrobe. Some still in the mail, some already in...

1. H&M embellished shoulder tunic top

I have strong (read: negative) feelings about H&M not being located here in the south and not having an online shopping site. Grrr. Couldn't find this online, but it's such a cute top/tunic. I plan on wearing it as both-- with a chunky cardigan/cape that I purchased a few years back, with jeans or leggings. It looks great belted (because of it's extreme over-sized body) and is super cute set off the shoulder. (Got an XS)

2. Patterson J. Kincaid Harlow blouse

I have been wanting an Equipment blouse for some time now (if you read this blog regularly, you've heard me ~~talking~~ obsessing about this for several months!), in an effort to add a simple silk blouse to my collection. But, the price is just too steep for me to justify, so I've held off. This PJK blouse is a great sub and I love the relaxed style and slouchy pockets. Plus, it's on Bloomie's "Must Have" list... yoink. I'll do a better review when I get it and can speak to the fit. (Got an XS)

3. F21 shoulder padded top

This is just simple and versatile. Nice fit (not too fitted, not too relaxed), plus it's a great way to take a simple grey tee and give it some more structure and a touch of chic. (Got a S)

4. Urban Outfitter's Puff Sleeve blazer

This doesn't seem to be in grey online, but that's the color I purchased (plus, as it is with UO, god love 'em, this is much cuter in person). I loved this the minute I put it on-- it's got a nice weight to it and fits beautifully (in a size up). The only issue I might have is the material-- it's a cotton/linen blend that seems to get wrinkly quick. Oh well, I don't mind steaming! (Got a S-- XS was a little too tight)

5. Anthro's Perilla Dress

So, I definitely veered from my pact to stop buying summer and made an exception with this. But the reason is sound-- it is so comfortable and will be wearable in Dallas through October. $59 for something I might just wear the next three months straight is fair to me. :) Seriously, it's perfect for work or the weekend (I'm wearing it today and wore it to a baby shower on Saturday!), plus the jersey material is the softest damn thing I've felt in a long time. It's totally adorable, too. (Got an XS, and prolly coulda used an XXS if they had one!) I'll post an OOTD with it tomorrow. :)

6. Anthro's Windstorm Necklace

Hubs bought this for me as a "going back to school gift" when it went on sale. I remember loving this when I saw it in the store modeled with a simple blouse, but $52? That was way too much for what it is. At $30, I feel much better about the price and know the jewel tones will work with a whole slew of stuff!

The ongoing theme? Neutral, neutral, neutral. Basics, basics, basics. To pair with all those other wacky items I own. How do you plan to style your fall?

When I bought my Tucker blouse, I loved the colors and print: pretty grey undertones, pops of coral, abstract florals. I assumed (dumbly) that I'd wear this baby out throughout the summer. Well, that was before I realized our temperatures would reach heat indices of 115 (I'm not kidding.). I thought, "That's fine! I'll just wear it when the weather get's cooler. Right?" Wrong. Looking at it now, I realize it's pretty summery to be wearing through the fall. What's a girl to do?

1. Wear it and hope I can run fast enough from building to building so that the sweat doesn't build up enough to leave stains (ewww, TMI).

2. Eff it all and wear it in the fall, despite its blatant spring-like tones. (With a chunky beige cardigan? And boots/jeans?)

3. All of the above. :)

Here's number one in action... (p.s. These are indeed shorts. No, I am not prancing around town in a skirt that barely covers my lady-parts. No, when I bend over you don't get a sneak peek. Yes, they still are super short!)

Fetching Fashions Fancies-- 8/5/10

I have been terrible, terrible at recurrent themed posts. I wanted to start ones on Etsy finds/independent designers! Fell through. I planned to do frequent polyvore stylings! Ixnayed. I even started that one on WWJW? and never kept going with it. Ugh.

But since I'm going back to school in about three and a half weeks (EEPPP!), I think I need to really try and get something going again. I talked a little about quitting the blog, but frankly, I think I would miss it too much to totally cut it cold turkey. So the current plan is this:

I'll blog 3-4 times per week unless otherwise noted.
I'm going to try and still post 2 or so OOTDs per week since they're actually my favorite and will still do my wishlisting (although to a lesser degree).
I also want to try a new and simple post for those days I might not have as much time but still want to think fashion: "Fetching Fashion Fancies." I'll post a "pick of the day," where I'll simply feature one or two (if I must!) items that I found on the interwebs and fell in love with. You know, to still get my fashion and blogging fix. :) Who doesn't like eye candy, anyways!

To inaugurate these posts, here's my pick of the day...

Lulu's Cadence Call Jacket, $86. A pretty, suede-esque jacket with gorgeous draping and a fabulous tan/olive hue. I could see this quickly becoming a fall wardrobe staple in my closet! Oh lala!

This will be the first of maybe 2 installments of "Randomness on Justine's iPhone." I finally tricked my computer into downloading my iPhone pics from my trip to DC (i.e., clicking DOWNLOAD ALL before it can shut down on me) and had to basically retrieve all of them. Which can be entertaining, especially for you who get to see them. Here we go!

This is a little creepy, yes, but here's the story: I recently got lash extensions! Before is above, obvi. They're semi-permanent, only lasting 1-2 weeks. They totally looked naturally and only cost me $25! Unfortunately, because I'm weird and a bit obsessive, I ripped them off after 3 days. They were fun for the trip I just made, though.

Readers. Oh readers. Its been a while, huh? Sorry about that, but as you may know, I just came back from DC yesterday evening and was so tired. Lovely Rosa and her cutie chihuahua Lola wore me out! After I sort through the pics (and when my computer wants to cooperate and let me get my pics off of my iPhone!), I'll post a few of what we did/ate. THANK YOU! to Rosa for hosting such a lovely weekend! We had a fabulous time. :)

Until then, here's a quickie of what I wore on my traveling day. The A+O Wrap Around Cardi came in the mail a few weeks ago and I heart this thing. The material is definitely gauzey, so it's not a fall/winter staple as much as it will be good for the summer/fall transition. But I also plan to layer with it (turtleneck under it; blazer over it). There are so many ways to wear this, but I tried it with a belt and liked it a lot. It was a perfect "inbetweener" item for the cold plane/the warm weather in DC. And the color is just so pretty!

(p.s. I did wear shoes for the airport. I just didn't want to wear them until the airport. Heh.)

I seriously detest that this shirt never photographs in it's actual color. Which is actually teal. While this makes it seem bright blue. All frustrations aside, I really love this blouse and never knew how much wear I would get from it at the time I bought it. Who would have thought I would become a silk blouse freak? All the better, because these pretty little babies will get me through the fall and winter under the blazers I plan on buying.

I really hate to say it, but this is about as print-mixing as I will go. I've seen bunches of other bloggies pulling off the print mix look, but I just can't seem to do it well. This blouse has a pseudo-cheetah print embossed on it; the skirt is striped; and the shoes are zebra. Wild and crazy, eh? I think there must be something about the look that is a little too hectic for me, and especially given the neutral tones of this past spring and now fall, I feel the urge to minimize rather than maximize. (Not that I'm all that great at minimalism, anyway.) (The first step is realizing you have a problem. The second step is realizing you don't want to do anything about it. :) )

If you can't already tell, I'm starting to warm... errr, cool? to the idea of fall. Its so hard when you start seeing the pretty colors and luxe fabrics the cooler months bring! So, as I do biannually, I find myself creating a loose list of what sorts of things I'll be buying in an effort to nail down some sort of style aesthetic for this half of the year. Here it is so far.

1. Olive green.

I don't care if I end up with a jacket, sweater, pants or top in this color as long as I own it. I have been drooling over the moss and army green shades I've been seeing and know it will be a big color for the fall/winter seasons. This J Crew silk jacket is very, very high on my wishlist right now, though! (Why must it be more than $100... why?!)

2. Blazers.

This is no shocker, people. My love for blazers and structured jackets is nothing new. But this season, since school will be in the picture, I plan on really getting some versatile blazers to mix and match with different tops and dresses. I love the vintage-like print on this one from Topshop! So fun.

3. OTK boots.

I've been talking about these since last year, yes I know. But I really love the look. The problem is the price. I don't want a leg full of pleather (teeters on trashy...), but the leather boots are a little hard to swallow. These Boutique 9's are perfect, but I will have to save my money!

4. Leopard.

Again, this is nothing new. I heart animal prints way more than I should. But I'm thinking I need some leopard booties as the quintessential expression of the fall leopard trend. *Dreams.*

5. Comfortable sweaters.

Duh. I mean, this is on everyone's wishlist, right? But I'm talking luxe, thick sweaters to be layered with and cozied up to. Very much like this cabin sweater by Anthro. Sigh.

6. Et Cetera.

This includes: cargo pants; a trench coat; clogs; lace up/peeptoe boots/booties, and so on. These are more wishlisted than needs, but should be included nonetheless. I'm organized here, people. :)

Sorry about the non-warned hiatus I took, readers! I do hate excuses, but I'll offer one anyway: my 17-year old sister was in town until today and spent a long weekend with us. Despite her pleading to "do a blog and let me take the pictures!", I decided to just resume my regularly scheduled posting today instead. :) I guess on the topic, I'll mention that this coming weekend will also require a little hiatus because I'm headed to DC on Friday. It shouldn't interrupt all that much, since I don't do too many weekend posts as it is, but just an FYI. I can't wait to report back about all the fun I have, though!

Here's a quick OOTD-- I decided to take my rarely-worn Modcloth dress and make it into a top instead of a short, tight dress. Made it more office-appropriate, I think! A few months ago, I scored the hot pink suede version of Elizabeth and James' Mason pumps (seen here, for one). Despite their slightly ankle-breaking quality, these babies are amazingly adorable and are the perfect Barbie shoe!

I tried to deny it. I tried to resist it. I tried....

But it's definitely that time of year.

You know what I'm talking about. The time of year when you've "been there, done that" for fashion and you need to move on to something new, something different, lest you be caught in a rut of the same old, same old. (I can't be alone, right?!)

The problem with this is that it is most definitely still summer and I most definitely still want it to be. But my wardrobe is getting old and my ideas are no longer fresh. As a fashion "OOTD" blogger-- someone who feels a little pressure to come up with new things and ideas-- this can be quite a task. Because when I walk in my closet, the only thing I'm thinking is "What shirt have I not yet ~~sweat through~~ worn with my requisite F21 shorts?" and my inspiration starts to wane when I see I've basically tried it all before. The previously exciting new ideas become stale and tried. What's left? A pair of jeans and a tee. All well and fine, yes, but inspirational? Not really.

So instead of trying to force it today, I'm going to let it be. I mean, this is a fashion diary of sorts, and diaries aren't simple tales of love and happiness. There are funks, too! And ho-hum entries! I'm learning that this fashion thing can't be forced, and if jeans and a tee are what I'm grabbing then so be it.

Whew, lovies! Lemme tell ya... when the AC and the power go out in your office building, it zaps energy. Lemme tell ya. Fortunately, today was much better (both came back on), so my blogging spirit is back in full force. Here's the outfit I wore this weekend with some friends who were in town from San Antonio. I love when they come in town, but since they're so used to being casual, I have to pick outfits carefully. Although I usually love over-dressing rather than under-dressing, I hate the possibility of making others uncomfortable, so I found a good mix in a bright top and some dressy shorts. Done and done.

If there is one style I love love love, it has to be the easy breezy cotton/jersey look. Granted, I think my style incorporates a lot of femininity and sometimes even edginess, but I'm always most comfortable in a loose top and leggings. I think that's why I fell pretty hard for the Seventy Two Changes top at Nordstrom's Anniversary sale. Its also great because it can be as easily worn now as it will be in the fall months. It may not be to everyone's liking (my friend's mother saw it on my blog and said, "What is that?!", hehe) but as long as you're not wearing it with some loose pants or sweats, it really looks adorable. There is a good reason this thing is called the boxy tee, and you can best see why in the last photo: it's literally in the shape of a square with holes in it for arms to pop out. The pockets just drape. The thing that really makes it has to be the little metallic stud details that add a little fun and make it more than just a sweatshirt-type top. This will look super cute with some leggings and booties for sure-- it even looks cute off the shoulders.

Shifting into fall: RESULTS.

Fetching Fashions here to report on the Nordstrom Ann'y Sale! :)

First, my take on the things I was shopping yesterday:

The Sanctuary cargos: Although some seem to really like these, I'm still on the fence. I just think they're not very "me" despite the fact that they're a trend. Plus, they didn't seem to fit me right. The material was nice but I was hoping for something a bit softer. I'm still contemplating getting the real thing, but with my doubts about them being my style, not sure it's the best idea. Skipped.

The Lily White banded skirt: very cute, but definitely an $18 skirt if you catch my drift. Something F21 may have sold. I feel like it was pretty every-day and not all that special. Granted, it is only $18, but I passed for now. I may change my mind and get it, but with all the other things I'm saving for, I just don't think I need this skirt.

Nick and Mo jacket: not sold in my store. Argh. I was really looking forward to seeing this one!

HUE corduroy leggings: As I was walking up to the rack of leggings, a cute little sales girl came up and told me to act fast because they were already almost sold out. Hmm, ok. I tried these on in the greyish color and really like them. I understand why they're selling! They are soft and somewhat thick, definitely reserved for cooler months. I think they'll go well with lots of things in my closet and will be perfect for wearing to class and lounging about. Plus, only $22. Purchased.

Things I spotted but didn't talk about:

Halogen Olivia boots: I did not try these babies on, but I thought they were really nice. A simple, black boot. Something I really should purchase sooner than later. Unfortunately, the idea of wearing boots right now makes me feel ill (literally-- this heat is making me nauseous!) so I couldn't bring myself to buy.

REPORT Monroe boots: So pretty. I thought these were nice in every color. Very versatile and great price at $109. I would recommend... but again, see comment above re: feeling ill thinking about them. Sigh.

Seventy Two Changes Boxy tee: Something I completely overlooked online and thought nothing of, until the nice SA snuck it in to my fitting room while I was trying other things. Funny thing, I didn't get anything I brought in and instead left with this on her suggestion! Thanks, Nordies SA! :) Its just so nice and comfortable-- it's a super-soft jersey and has nice little pyramid studs on it. It was so cute with my J Brands and Topshop necklace (thanks, T, who recently visited Brighton, England!) that I had to buy it. Impulse much?

Also tried on the Patterson J Kincaid harem pants and liked them, but wasn't sure if I looked like I dropped a load in them or not. Passed.

In other shopping news, I went a searchin' for this pretty cardigan that Chloe featured on her shopping blog and didn't find it. Curse you, Dallas retail buyers who aren't getting sweaters because it's hot as bejeezus here! But it's high on my wishlist for sure!

Shifting into fall...

It's a huge dilemma, people: do I fall into fall in the middle of July? Or do I hold out?

I think the problem is twofold: 1. There are so many cute new fall items out there. 2. I will not be able to wear said cute items for probably another 4 months. Sad story, but true for us Southerners. However, if I will be shopping, I ought to be shopping fall since my summer closet is pretty filled to the brim.

With these considerations in mind, I will trek to my local Nordstrom today to see what I can see of the Anniversary sale. Here's what I'll be shopping (lest the 106 degree temps make me faint):

Sanctuary Peace cargos, on sale for $78.90 (and believe you me, that ugly belt will be promptly removed.)

Lily White Banded Skirt, on sale for $17.90 (!)

Nick and Mo Ruffle Jacket, on sale for $39.90 (I am a little worried I'll be sized out of this.)

Hue Cords leggings, on sale for $21.90 (looks cozy!)

The forecast has called for 106 heat-index temperatures all day. What do I decide to do? Go to an outdoor play. Awesome. :) Here's the outfit, which is honestly a little more "tribal" than I typically go for, but hey. I've been lately inspired by all the utility-pocketed shirts and cargos I've spotted for fall. Plus, it's so super hot and I don't feel like wearing my go-to white or black F21 shorts tonight. Sigh.

1. Please ignore my totally horrible photoshop skillz and the fact that I had to photoshop out my bra straps because I forgot to put on a strapless. Ooops. (maybe I just shouldn't have said anything and then you wouldn't have noticed? Too late.)

2. I think I'm teetering on going overboard on the beads, but I also think it works. So I'm sticking with the latter.

3. Who is ready for the weekend? I feel like it should be Friday already. I'm ready for some pool-time, the Anniversary sale and relaxing. Come quickly, Saturday!

Shoe Love: shoes that kill.

Just had to share these today. When I saw the email in my inbox this morning from SHE Boutique, I knew this is the stuff that fashion is made of. Artistic, architectural, wonderfully-wacky, almost-unwearable, (totally out of my league).... Not that fashion has to be or even is always like that, but it's inspirational when it is! RD is known for her crazy shoes-- last year I spotted some detachable heel shoes that I thought were pretty neato. If I could, I would totally rock these babies with some skinny jeans and an oversized linen sweater. Casual on top, BAM on bottom. :)

Don't you just hate it when you have a nice item sitting in your closet that you never wear? This happens to me way more than I'd like to admit. I have a tendency of buying things that I love but aren't super practical. The only upside to this is that it really challenges me to step outside my usual boundaries and switch things up.

So as I was sitting at work today, daydreaming and... well, not really working... I remembered that I haven't given enough attention to my Rebecca Taylor cheetah print skirt. The reason is definitely because it's a "going out skirt." Even though I wish my life were more glamorous, it's pretty true that my weekends don't always allow me to wear my fun little numbers. What's a girl to do? Wear them anyway. And wear them for daytime.

'Course, there are no rules per se for wearing a mini when the light is bright, but I think the best course of action is:
1. Balance the legginess on bottom with some covered-upness on top. This is always a good idea, but more so during the day!
2. Keep jewelry toned down, or else it gets too dressed up.
3. Try flats or sandals instead of heels to maintain the laid-back air.

(note: This is not work friendly. Although somewhat-short skirts are OK in certain office environments, please don't think I pranced in to work today wearing this little ditty. But it's totally day-do-able whilst shopping or catching a nice lunch on a patio. On a non-work day.)

Conclusions to Which I've Come.

...Some good, some not-so-good.

1. Having a house means you're a grownup. There is no way around it. It also apparently means handymen knock on your door Sunday morning without warning to fix the crack in your ceiling and put the varnish on the door. And you'll inevitably be in your PJs still and not fully awake and trying to remember the Spanish that you haven't studied since 4th grade. "Coma estas, Mr. Handyman? Ummm... uhhh, el sol es brillo, no?"

2. Fall is coming, no matter how much I want to pretend it's not. Well, ok. So there are several months left for wearing tees and shorts, but in the world of fashion, there's no escaping it. The only good thing about this is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. But once that's over, I swear! I'll be hating fall again! Promise!

3. (Although this is seriously making me want to change my mind. But I'm holding tight to my summer! Damnit!)

4. T-minus 18 days until my uber-girly weekend in DC, during which time I will gorge on good food, good shopping, and good cupcakeries. (Wahoo!)

5. This makes me even more sad that the shorts died over the holiday weekend. I miss them! (But, thanks to Meggy for the shout-out!! Totally flattering.)

6. Cheese made of 75% butterfat is the equivalent of heaven on earth. Fo'realz. (you can get it at the grocery store, too!)

Fashion + Google = Greatness.

Happy Friday to my readers!

So over on Jenny's blog yesterday, I spied a post that really intrigued me: it was about a new pilot program launched by Google to improve the ties between fashion and technlogy. This seems pretty fitting, since the world of fashion blogging has really grown over time, and we fashion-bloggers know first hand about the intersection between style, fashion and tech-savvy. Many of us fashionista/os are using the internet and technlogy to not just promote style, but follow and keep up with it as well. To get this all started, Google needs our fashion-blogging help.
